Tornado sweeps through Chicago suburbs, causing damage | India News

CHICAGO: A radar-confirmed tornado ripped through communities in Chicago’s densely populated suburbs, damaging more than 100 homes, knocking down trees, cutting off power and causing multiple injuries, authorities said.
At least five people, including a woman who was listed in critical condition, were hospitalized in Naperville, where 16 homes were “uninhabitable” and dozens of other homes were damaged when a tornado touched down after 11 p.m. Sunday, the spokeswoman for the LAW said. Linda city. LaCloche.
More than 120 reports of property damage had been received as of 5 a.m. Monday in the city about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Chicago and were expected to increase as residents surveyed for damage from the storm. He said. Around 450 power outages were reported.
“We’re lucky it wasn’t worse,” LaCloche said Monday morning. “We have a lot of utility poles and power lines down and trees damaged.”
The video showed several large downed trees and damage to homes and vehicles in the path of the storm. Some gas leaks were reported in Naperville, and crews went door-to-door shutting down the lines, he said.
Officials from the nearby village of Woodridge said a tornado made landfall Sunday night and a damage assessment was underway. There were no reports of major injuries in the community, but people were urged to avoid the area due to power lines and downed trees.
The storm destroyed the second floor of Bridget Casey’s house in Woodridge. He sat in a lawn chair in the driveway before dawn on Monday. Her 16-year-old son, Nate Casey, said he was watching television when the storm passed and ran to help his mother carry her three younger brothers to the basement.
“I just heard a loud bang and I was thinking, ‘Oh, what are my brothers doing?’ I’m going to look and see the sky, and then I hear my brothers screaming from the room, “he told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Illinois, said a weather service team would inspect the storm’s damage Monday to determine the strength of the tornado and its trajectory. He said the same storm is believed to have passed through Naperville, Woodridge and Darien, and may also have caused damage at Burr Ridge, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
“If there were no fatalities and they have not informed us, that is great news considering the population of the area, the level of damage and the time of day, after 11 at night, when many people may be sleeping”, He said. .
Radar had also shown the storm’s rotation in several other areas of Chicago’s suburbs, and also in northwestern Indiana in the Hobart and South Haven areas, Friedlein said.
The threat of wind damage lingered for a few hours as the storm line moved over northern Illinois and into northwestern Indiana, forecasters said. The severe threat was declared terminated at 2 am local time.
Late on Sunday and early Monday morning, severe thunderstorms also brought gusts of wind and torrential rain to parts of Michigan. And in Missouri, a storm with strong winds hit parts of the state Sunday night and early Monday, knocking down trees and power lines.
