Restore J&K Statehood, Congress Says Ahead of Prime Minister’s Meeting | India News

NEW DELHI: Before a meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Jammu and Kashmir, Congress said Sunday that the Center should accept the demand for restoration of statehood to J&K in the interests of the Constitution and democracy.
However, the chief congressional spokesman, Randeep Surjewala, did not say whether the party will participate in the June 24 meeting or not.
Surjewala drew attention to the resolution of the Congressional Working Committee (CWC) of August 6, 2019, where the party clearly demanded the restoration of full statehood for the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We believe that undoing it is a direct attack on democracy and constitutional principles,” he told reporters when asked about the issue.
His remarks came after invitations were sent to 14 political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, including four former chief ministers, to participate in a high-level meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Modi at his residence here at 3:00 p.m. hours of June 24.
The meeting is expected to establish the roadmap for holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Surjewala said that Congress believes that granting full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as well as holding elections, so that the people can elect their representatives and have an assembly of their own to conduct state affairs instead. from a Delhi rule, it is the only way forward to ensure the full restoration of democratic rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Now it is up to the prime minister and the BJP to decide whether to hold a meeting or accept the demand of the Indian National Congress in the interests of the constitution, democracy and the people to restore full statehood to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. , “Said Surjewala.
This will be the prime minister’s first interaction with all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, 2019, when the Center removed JK’s special status and divided it into two union territories. The old state has been under the rule of the Center since November 2018.
The PDP’s political affairs committee (PAC) has authorized the party chief, Mehbooba Mufti, to take a call at the invitation of the Center.
The People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), an amalgamation of major parties in JK, will meet on Tuesday where member parties will discuss the issue and make a final decision on whether to participate in the prime minister’s meeting.
