NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, requesting his personal intervention to resolve physicians’ bodily pleas to ensure that medical professionals can work without fear and take action against people who spread misinformation about vaccination campaign.
“Anyone who spreads misinformation against the vaccination campaign aimed at combating the Covid-19 pandemic must be registered and punished in accordance with the law, including the relevant provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897, the Criminal Code of the India. And the Disaster Management Act 2005. All these acts of omission and commission on behalf of anyone who raises doubts in the mind of the general public against the protocol guidance issued by the Ministry of Health for treatment of patients infected by Covid-19 – should be duly punished and, simultaneously, any attempt by anyone to deceive the gullible public and promote so-called “magic remedies” or “wonderful drugs” without the approval of the Ministry of Health of the Government of the India must be restricted immediately. ” the letter says.
IMA also requested that in the ‘Bill of 2019 on health services personnel and clinical establishments (prohibition of violence and damage to property)’, which seeks to sanction people who attack on-call doctors and other professionals of health through the imposition of a prison sentence of up to 10 years, which should be enacted immediately along with the incorporation of provisions of the IPC / CrPC and with stipulations for a fixed timetable for the speedy conclusion of trials.
IMA said that everyone involved in such heinous crimes should be punished to create an effective deterrent for other antisocial elements who can afford to attack any healthcare professional.

IMA also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish a separate research cell to study these post-Covid-19 complications in detail and to come up with multifaceted treatment guidelines across all disciplines of Medicine.
