BENGALURU: The week of May 29-June 4 turned out to be the deadliest for Bengaluru, with a Covid-19 fatality rate (CFR) skyrocketing to 7%, the highest in the city in 2021.
During the period, Bengaluru witnessed 25,699 new cases and 1,797 deaths. The CFR remained at 4.8% during May 22-28, although the city recorded 1.3 lakh of cases and 2,037 deaths. The case positivity rate is dropping now. From May 29 to June 4, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) tested 4.2 lakh and the positivity rate was 6%. It was almost 12% the week before.
According to P Rajendra Cholan, special commissioner of BBMP, the CFR in the last week “is visibly higher since the total number of positive cases is lower”. “The daily average of positive Covid cases fell to 3,500 in the last week, while last week it was from 6,000 to 8,000 per day. The absolute number of deaths from Covid is lower, ”he said.
