Assam Major Rifles Arrested For “Killing” Civilian | India News

IMPHAL: An Assam Rifles commander was arrested in Manipur on Saturday after a 26-year-old man who had been shot in Kangpokpi district the night before took the officer’s name in his death statement.
Major Alok Sathe is accused of detaining the murdered young man, identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum, when he was “off duty” and of opening fire on him without provocation. Sathe, attached to the 44th Assam Rifles Battalion, is the commander of the Gelnel village post of the paramilitary force. As word spread of his alleged role in Mangboilal’s death, area residents stormed the Assam Rifles post on Saturday, demanding action against the officer. A car and a truck were set on fire during the protest. An FIR has been registered and the circumstances of the alleged shooting are being investigated, said Kangpokpi SP PG Singsit.
Thangminlien Kipgen, secretary of the influential Kangpokpi chapter of Kuki Inpi, claimed that the last words of the Mangboilan truck maintenance staff were that “Major Alok shot me.” He died while being taken to the hospital. “He (the officer) was dressed in civilian clothes, with four of his men brandishing their weapons at the civilian (Mangboilal).”
Mangboilal was the sole breadwinner in his family, made up of his wife and four children.
