NEW DELHI: The first Delhi study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on breakthrough infections during the period from April to May confirmed that none of the vaccinated people died due to Covid-19 disease.
Breakthrough infection denotes if one has contracted Covid-19 after being fully vaccinated.
According to the study, in the current group of novel vaccine infections investigated by genome sequencing, which closely overlap and reflect the Covid-19 cases in the state of Delhi, the variants of interest are B.1.617.2 and B .1.1.7 that comprise the majority of cases.
While a number of vaccine breakthrough infections have been previously reported, they have been largely associated with non-serious symptoms. During the later course of the disease, neither disease worsening (stable biomarkers) nor mortality was reported in the present group, confirming the above observations.
Of the 63 emerging infections, 36 patients received two doses, while 27 received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Ten patients received Covishield, while 53 received Covaxin.
“Viral load at diagnosis was high in all patients regardless of vaccination status or type of vaccine received, and the initial course of illness with high-grade non-remitting fever lasted five to seven days in the vaccinated group. , similar to the clinical presentation in unvaccinated patients, “he added.
While a number of vaccine breakthrough infections have been previously reported, they have been largely associated with non-serious symptoms.
The patients had a mean age of 37 (21-92), of which 41 were men and 22 women. None of the patients had comorbidities that could act as a predisposing factor for breakthrough infections.
“Although antibody levels for a subset of patients were available, they were infected anyway and presented to the emergency like other patients, calling into question the protection offered or the clinical relevance of total immunoglobulin G (IgG). as a substitute for Covid-19 immunity, “the report read.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Health reported today that so far more than 22.41 million doses of vaccine have been administered within the framework of the national Covid-19 vaccination campaign.
