CHENNAI: One lion died of suspected coronavirus infection at Chennai’s Vandalur Zoo, while nine others tested positive.
Samples were collected from the lions and sent to the National Institute for High Security Animal Diseases, which confirmed the coronavirus infection.
According to a highly placed source in the wildlife wing of the Tamil Nadu forest department, one of the lions at the zoo had health problems and zoo administrators suspected it was coronavirus. Samples were immediately collected and sent to the institute, confirming the virus attack on lions. A male lion died. The reason for his death was being analyzed by the authorities.
The zoo was closed after the state government announced curbs to control Covil-19. Subsequently, all precautionary measures were taken at the zoo to prevent the spread of the virus. However, it was not known how the lions got the infection, the source said.
Authorities at the Vandalur Zoo were obtaining details on the treatment protocol from the Hyderabad Zoo, where some lions recently contracted the disease.
