NEW DELHI: The preliminary investigations by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) into the recent twin cases of SpiceJet: Madurai’s wedding letter that saw the violation of Covid rules by the guests and a charter flight with boxers Indians to Dubai allegedly without proper clearances have reportedly encountered several lapses. by the airline.
India’s aviation regulator had investigated three consecutive cases of the low-cost carrier, the third being a May 11 charter to the Croatian capital, Zagreb, where its four pilots had to spend 21 hours on board before operating the plane back to Delhi as they did. have no negative RT-PCR test report.
After the investigation, the regulator asked SpiceJet to fix the problems raised in the investigation of the two cases.
A Spicejet spokesperson said: “The airline has been asked to take appropriate action and share a report. Spicejet will do the same.”
The sources said the DGCA investigation “shows that the May 22 letter between Delhi and Dubai to fly 31 Indian boxers (including Mary Kom) did not have all the necessary clearances to operate that flight.” The UAE authorities reportedly did not have a permit for this plane and only allowed it to land when the pilot declared a fuel emergency and in the intervention of the Indian embassy in Dubai.
For its part, the airline maintained that “the flight and the passengers had the proper documentation.”
The DGCA investigation into the status of the May 23 wedding in Madurai that saw violations of the Covid rule on board by several of the 130 passengers reportedly found flaws with the airline. The airline could not prevent this, sources said, and did not report the same. This became known when the videos and images of the wedding celebrations on the air went viral.
The DGCA had previously excluded pilots and taxi crews from the Madurai wedding charter flight and ordered the airline to file complaints against Covid violators while ordering an investigation. On this issue, the airline maintains that everyone on board was informed of the flight rules in time from Covid and that the violation occurred “despite repeated requests and reminders.”
This isn’t the first time SpiceJet has run into trouble with the DGCA after a series of slip-ups. In the 2019 monsoon, the airline had been under the lens of the regulator after three consecutive wet runway landing incidents.
