NEW DELHI: Former Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra took over as the new chairman of the National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, official sources said.
The post of head of the NHRC had been vacant since Justice HL Dattu, former Chief Justice of India, had completed his term in December 2020.
“Judge Arun Mishra joined today as the new president of the National Human Rights Commission. A member of the panel has also joined,” the sources said.
Judge Mishra, who became a Supreme Court judge on July 7, 2014, resigned in September 2020.
Judge Dattu had joined the NHRC on February 29, 2016 after retiring as CJI on December 2, 2015.
