NEW DELHI: With increased production capacity, about 25 billion ‘Made in India’ vaccines are expected to be available in August, a senior official said, noting that it will go a long way toward meeting the target of vaccinating. to a million people. daily against Covid-19.
There has been a shortage of vaccines after it was decided to open vaccination to everyone over 18 years of age.
“Yesterday, the SII in a letter mentioned that they will manufacture between 10 and 12 million rupees of vaccine doses, which represents an increase of almost 50 percent (of their capacity) by the end of June. Similarly, Covaxin also will increase their production and by the end of July they will also produce between 10 and 12 crore doses (per month), “said Dr. NK Arora, chair of the Covid-19 working group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI).
Pune-based SII (Serum Institute of India) manufactures Covishield vaccine against Covid-19, while Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech manufactures Covaxin.
“By August we will have 20-25 crore of vaccine doses per month, another 5-6 crore of doses from other manufacturing units or if we obtain doses of international vaccines. The goal is to vaccinate one crore of people every day,” said the Dr. Arora.
He said India could begin in a few weeks to test the feasibility of a regimen “that mixes two different doses of Covid vaccines to see if it helps boost the immune response to the virus.” The researchers in such a study would see the effects of administering a different vaccine in the second dose.
Currently, the country has 7-7.5 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin per month.
Daily Covid-19 cases in India continue to decline with 1,52,734 new infections recorded in the past 24 hours, the lowest in 46 days.
