States distributed about 50% of free cereal grains for May | India News

NEW DELHI: States and Union Territories have distributed around 50% of free food grains to the poor under Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna (PMGKAY) by May.
While some states, including Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh have distributed the allocated food grains to 77-81% of beneficiaries, in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Goa, the distribution up to May 25 was less. from 1%.
Officials said the distribution of 5 kg of free food grains to each beneficiary identified under the National Food Safety Act (NFSA) is lower in some states because they had distributed a food grain quota 2-3 months in advance to beneficiaries under NFSA before PMGKAY III was announced.
Sources said the Center had allowed states in April to distribute food grains to beneficiaries up to six months in advance. “This step was taken when the number of Covid infections started to increase. Advance distribution of food grains was also seen to help reduce overcrowding and infections. We are confident that all of the allocated food grains will be distributed by the states by the end of June, ”said an official from the Ministry of Food.
The government has implemented PMGKAY-III for two months, May and June, which entitles some 80 million million NFSA beneficiaries to obtain 5 kg of food grains at no cost. The plan was successful in bringing relief to people during the first wave of Covid, according to the government.
