NEW DELHI: India on Friday supported the renewed global call for a comprehensive WHO study on the origins of the coronavirus, days after US President Joe Biden called on US intelligence agencies to “redouble” their efforts. to investigate the emergence of the pandemic amid growing controversy over the origins of the virus from a laboratory in China.
In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report on the origins of the virus, but it fell short of the expectations of the United States and other leading countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said the follow-up to the WHO report and further studies deserve everyone’s understanding and cooperation.
“The global study convened by the WHO on the origin of Covid-19 is an important first step. It highlighted the need for studies of the next phase, as well as more data and studies to reach solid conclusions,” he said.
Bagchi was responding to media inquiries on the matter.
“The follow-up to the WHO report and further studies deserve everyone’s understanding and cooperation,” he said.
President Biden had ordered US intelligence agencies on Wednesday to “redouble” their efforts to investigate the emergence of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic and to report back to him within 90 days.
Covid-19 was first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.
