Congressional Leader Anand Sharma Says Vaccination Collapsed, Prime Minister Should Talk To CM About New Policy | India News

NEW DELHI: Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Modi government of lying about the deaths caused by the Covid pandemic, even as the party’s deputy, Anand Sharma, said the vaccination program had collapsed. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a meeting of senior ministers to formulate a new vaccination policy.
Tagging a foreign press report juxtaposing India’s official Covid death figures of three lakh with his own projection of the “most likely scenario” of 1.6 million deaths, Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “The numbers don’t lie, the Government of India does. ” The report of the reputed US newspaper also stated that “in a worst case scenario” there could be 4.2 million deaths.
Amid the ongoing fight between the Center and the states over the purchase and distribution of vaccines, Anand Sharma said compatriots were “suffering and discouraged” and that the pandemic and the mismanagement of vaccines were the result of the centralization of power.
“I urge the Prime Minister to initiate a dialogue with the top ministers to meet this challenge. Ideological differences will continue to exist in a democracy, but these differences must not become personal. The path of confrontation between the Center and the states harms the national interest from India Prime Minister Modi has spoken of cooperative federalism. Now is the time to preach, “said Sharma.
In a strong criticism of the Center, Sharma said that states were disempowered due to central government decisions and that it was “unfair” to hold them accountable.
“How can states be asked to import vaccines in times of global disaster? Import-export, customs and trade policies are central issues,” he argued.
