S Jaishankar to meet with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Friday | India News

WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who is currently visiting the United States, is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon on Friday, said Wednesday (local time) the Pentagon press secretary John Kirby.
Jaishankar arrived in the US on May 24 and is scheduled to visit many senior officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his stay until May 28.
India is in talks with various US entities involved in the production of Covid vaccines and hopes to acquire and subsequently produce these vaccines. The issue of vaccine procurement is expected to be a key item on the agenda during Jaishankar’s interaction with the US leadership and other stakeholders.
The United States has already announced that it will distribute 80 million vaccines from its stocks to countries that need them.
The United States is playing a leading role in assisting in India’s fight against the CO-19 virus. It has already provided large oxygen plants, concentrators, critical drugs like Remdesivir, and also raw materials for the vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII), which makes Covishield.
The United States also supports the Indian-sponsored proposal on the TRIPS waiver at the WTO.
The TRIPS exemption aims to increase global vaccine production to take on the challenge of vaccinating the poorest of the poor and saving lives.
In October last year, India and South Africa, together with 57 WTO members, proposed an exemption from certain provisions of the TRIPS agreement for the prevention, containment and treatment of the coronavirus. EAM Jaishankar met with his American counterpart Antony Blinken in early May in London during the G7 Foreign Minister meeting.
