KOLKATA: At least one million people were affected and three lakh houses damaged in West Bengal due to harsh weather conditions stemming from cyclone ‘Yaas’, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.
One person died “accidentally” when he was out fishing, he said.
Warning people that the high tide caused by storm surge would persist, Banerjee said Bengal is the “worst affected state.”
Cyclone ‘Yaas’ made landfall on Wednesday morning near Dhamra port in Odisha, at 130-140 km / h, with gusts of 155 km / h, according to Doppler radar data.
The prime minister further said that as many as 04.15.506 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas of the state and moved to safer places.
“I will soon undertake an aerial reconnaissance of the affected areas in the districts of Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas,” Banerjee said.
As of now, the government has a preliminary idea of ​​the damage caused, based on reports provided by district magistrates and other senior officials, the CM said.
“We will conduct field studies to obtain a final estimate … It will take us at least 72 hours to have a clearer idea,” he added.
