Yaas: Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda, Durgapur, Rourkela and Kolkata airports to be closed for commercial flights | India News


NEW DELHI: Scheduled commercial flight operations are suspended at airports in cities expected to withstand the brunt of Cyclone Yaas starting at midnight.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said that Bhubaneswar will be closed from 11pm on Tuesday to 5am on Thursday (May 27); Jharsuguda from 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday to 7:45 a.m. on Thursday. Durgapur and Rourkela airports will be closed on Wednesday. Business operations in Kolkata will be suspended from 8.30am to 7.45pm on Wednesday.
“The closure will be reviewed based on the weather. Airports (have) been instructed to carry out restoration to restart operations as soon as possible, ”the AAI said in a series of tweets Tuesday night.
“When reviewing the movement of the Yaas cyclone, the president of the AAI led a virtual meeting on Tuesday attended by (senior officials). The preparedness of airports to deal with the cyclone was closely monitored and evaluated. As the cyclonic landfall is expected by Wednesday noon near Balasore in Odisha, the associated weather in the region is likely to develop with strong winds and rain, ”the AAI tweeted.
“Calcutta Airport will be closed for scheduled commercial flight operations from 8.30am to 7.45pm on May 26. Bhubaneswar Airport will be closed from 11 p.m. on Tuesday to 5 a.m. on Thursday. Jharsuguda Airport will be closed from 12:01 am on Wednesday to 7:45 am on Thursday. Durgapur and Rourkela airports will be closed on Wednesday, ”he also said.
