NEW DELHI: Even as Covid-19 cases have started to decline once again and the rate of recovery is improving, there are post-Covid sequelae (side effect of a disease) that need to be addressed, said AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria, highlighting the opportunities for post-Covid care clinics and rehabilitation centers to address these types of problems.
Pointing out the symptoms seen in people who have recovered from Covid-19, Guleria said: “If symptoms are seen for 4-12 weeks, it is called continuous symptomatic Covid or post-acute Covid syndrome. If symptoms are seen for more than 12 weeks, it is called post-Covid syndrome or prolonged Covid and that also needs treatment. ”
Common symptoms are shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, anxiety, and a high pulse. These symptoms can remain due to the body’s immune response to inflammation.
“There is also chronic fatigue syndrome and it needs symptomatic treatment. Another is mental confusion when people who have recovered from Covid have difficulty concentrating and find it difficult to work and also suffer from insomnia and depression, ”said Dr. Guleria.
Experts say that while several people still report these issues after recovering from Covid-19, all of these require rehabilitation through multidisciplinary post-Covid clinics.
