Shopian Leverages Religious Influencers and Booth Data to Vaccinate 45+ | India News

NEW DELHI: Shopian district administration in South Kashmir leveraged religious influencers and voter data with Cabin Level Officers (BLO) to vaccinate its entire population over 45 with the first dose on Sunday, two days later Jammu became the first district to reach the goal.
Innovative thinking put Shopian ahead of other districts when the campaign launched in March. He held the lead until two days ago, when Jammu hit him to the goalpost, authorities said. But still, it’s no small feat in a southern Kashmir district that has become the center of new-age militancy and is surrounded by Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag.
“The administration supported the health department with all its weight. The Auqaf (mosque administrators) committees were set up to motivate the people. BLO and Anganwadi Workers were dispatched for a house-to-house survey to determine and assist more than 45 people in each household who had not yet been vaccinated. The SDM and Tehsildars, etc. they were tasked with monitoring progress at the village level, ”Zainpora SDM Mushtaq Ahmad Lone told TOI.
He said vaccination could progress quickly because there was no shortage of doses for the target group, “thanks to LG (Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha).” “The DM was involved 24×7. If the vaccination rate dropped in one village, our whole focus would shift there the next day until everyone was vaccinated, ”Lone said. District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya did not respond to TOI’s calls or text messages.
The health department established more than 70 vaccination centers, each with the capacity to vaccinate 100 to 150 people. Shopian has a population of almost three lakhs. Authorities said 78,769 have been vaccinated.
Lone also credited social influencers and the police for the success. “The administration put all its weight behind the health department. But it would not have been possible without the support of society and its leaders. The police also played a very constructive role. They never denied us help, “Lone said.
When asked how he felt about his role in the success of the campaign, he said: “Naturally, I feel happy. Ghar ka ladka ghar ke logon ke liye ek achche kaam mein kirdar nibha paya. (As a local, I am happy to be able to play a role in doing a greater good for the people.)
