NEW DELHI: An additional sessions court on Friday acquitted Tehelka founding editor Tarun Tejpal for allegedly raping his colleague at a luxury hotel in Goa.
Tehelka’s former editor-in-chief, who was present in court, was charged with sexually assaulting a colleague inside a Goa hotel elevator in 2013.
After the acquittal, the founding editor of Tehelka Tejpal Tarun He said that in November 2013 he was falsely accused of sexual assault by a colleague and that today the judge of the trial court of additional sessions in Goa has acquitted him. “In a terribly flawed age where ordinary courage has become rare, I thank you for standing up for the truth,” Tejpal said.
While the trial in the case has been completed, the sentence, which was originally scheduled to be delivered on April 27, had been postponed three times.
Attorney Rajeev Gomes, who was Tejpal’s lead defense attorney in the case, died of Covid-related complications last week.
Goa police registered an FIR against Tejpal in November 2013, after which he was arrested.
He has been free on bail since May 2014.
The Goa criminal branch had filed a charge sheet against Tejpal.
He faced a low judgment CPI sections 341 (improper restraint), 342 (improper confinement), 354 (assault or criminal force with intent to violate modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-B (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with the intention to undress), 376 (2) (f) (person in a position of authority over the woman, committing rape) and 376 (2) k) (rape by person in a position of control).
He had previously transferred to the Bombay High Court, seeking a stay of the charges against him, but his request was dismissed.
