Covid: Closely Monitoring Forward Infections, Says Government | India News

NEW DELHI: Amid concerns about emerging infections even after receiving the vaccines, the government said the data is being closely monitored even though the number of such infections after receiving the injections is very small so far.
“We want to assure you that the Medical Research Council of India keeps a very close watch in this regard, where this testing-related information comes in,” said NITI Aayog and Health Fellow Dr. VK Paul.
Noting that during testing, people are asked whether or not they have been vaccinated, Dr. Paul said these data will help assess the situation and provide information on breakthrough infections.
In April, the director general of the ICMR, Balram Bhargava, had said that only two to four of every 10,000 life-threatening infections had occurred after vaccination against Covid-19. Only 0.04% of people tested positive after the second dose of Covaxin and 0.03% after the second dose of Covishield.
Underlining the importance of the vaccine, officials said that even if there is a penetrating infection, vaccines in most cases protect against serious diseases and recovery is faster.
However, since the situation is dynamic, it needs close monitoring and people must continue to wear masks and follow physical distancing, authorities said.
“In a dynamic situation, we have to watch it very carefully … vaccines are protective to a certain extent and the efficacy rates are at a certain level and therefore in an overwhelming situation that risk remains and that is why it is important that Let’s also continue to take extra precautions to make sure we are protected, ”said Dr. Paul.
