Children mostly asymptomatic but capable of transmitting Covid-19: Government | India News

NEW DELHI: Amid growing concern that kids could be particularly vulnerable to future waves of Covid-19, the government said Tuesday that existing evidence suggested that children were generally asymptomatic but capable of spreading the disease.
“The answer remains the same as what we do, we have to protect ourselves with appropriate behavior from Covid and children should be encouraged to wear masks and maintain social distancing. A clearly defined science-driven protocol is now available. If symptoms of Covid-19 are seen in children, then it should be followed, ”said Dr. VK Paul, Health Fellow at Niti Aayog.
Severe illness in children was rare, but a clinical management protocol had been in place for that as well, Dr. Paul said. Referring to the earlier sero-survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research, he said that the infection had comparable rates among children over 10 years old and adults in December-January.
However, whether children could be more vulnerable to Covid-19 in the near future would also depend on mutations, he added. Covaxin from Bharat Biotech has obtained permission for phase 2/3 clinical trials in children.
