BENGALURU: A day after Prime Minister BS Yediyurappa and his cabinet colleagues held a press conference on government initiatives to control the Covid-19 pandemic, but admitted vaccine shortages, the Karnataka Congressional unity rebuked the BJP government by setting aside Rs 100 million for direct procurement of vaccines on the open market to help people who seek them.
The vaccine, as long as it is available with the party, will be distributed at no cost.
On Friday, in a joint presser for KPCC President DK Shivakumar and leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah, Congress announced that the party will provide Rs 10 crore from its internal funds and the remainder of Rs 90 crore will be raised from the development fund of each MLA and MLC.
“Each of the legislators will draw 1 million rupees from their local area development fund and contribute to the vaccine procurement fund of the Congress PartySiddaramaiah said.
While berating the Yediyurappa government in the state and the prime minister Narendra modi regime in the center for failing to control the rapid spread of the vaccine, the congressional party said funds were being raised due to its failure.
“We urge that, in the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the central and state governments allow us to purchase the vaccines directly from the manufacturers and distribute them to the people at no cost,” said Shivakumar.
The congressional party has warned the state government that the opposition will not sit still if there are allegations of misappropriation in the recently launched global tender for the purchase of vaccines proposed by it.
“We ask that the process be completely transparent and ensure that people’s money is not scammed during the bidding process,” the party said.
Meanwhile, Karnataka in charge and AICC Secretary General Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted and said: “The 100 CR # vaccination plan! This is the form of Congress! Congratulations to the Karnataka Congress, Siddaramaiah, DKShivakumar & Congress MLA / MLC’s for offering CR 100 from the ‘Development Fund’ for free vaccination at 18-44 years in Karnataka. Will BJP-Yediyurappa Govt now wake up from his slumber? ”
