Assamese author Homen Borgohain dies | India News
GUWAHATI: Eminent Assamese writer and journalist Homen Borgohain died in a hospital in Guwahati on Wednesday, following post-Covid complications, doctors saying.
He was 89 years old and two sons survived him. He has been separated from his wife Nirupama Borgohain, also a prominent writer and journalist, for several years.
Borgohain was found to be positive for Covid on April 24 and admitted to the Gauhati College of Medicine and Hospital, from where he was released on May 7 after testing negative. Last night he fell out of bed in his sleep and was rushed to the hospital where he died, doctors said.
A prolific author and columnist, Borgohain received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1978 for his book ‘Pita-Putra’, which he returned in 2015 in protest against the growing religious and social intolerance in the country. At the time of his death, he was editor-in-chief of the Assamese daily ‘Niyomiya Barta’.
