Government Approves Acquisition of 1.5 Lakh Units of DRDO's 'Oxycare' System | India News

NEW DELHI: The government approved on Wednesday the acquisition of 1.50,000 units of the ‘Oxycare’ system, developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), for Rs 322.5 crore from PM-CARES Fund to assist in the treatment of patients with Covid-19.
Oxycare is an oxygen delivery system based on the level of SpO2 (oxygen saturation). The DRDO has already transferred the technology to multiple industries in India for the large-scale production of the Oxycare system.
“PM-CARES Fund has granted a sanction for the acquisition of 1.50,000 units of the ‘Oxycare’ system developed by the DRDO at a cost of Rs 322.5 crore,” he said.
The ministry said that 1,00,000 manual and 50,000 automatic Oxycare systems are being purchased.
“The Oxycare system delivers supplemental oxygen based on SpO2 levels and prevents a person from sinking into a state of hypoxia that can be fatal,” the ministry said in a statement.
Oxycare was developed by DRDO’s Defense Electro Medical and Bioengineering Laboratory (DEBEL), based in Bengaluru, for soldiers stationed in extreme high altitude areas.
“The system is locally developed to operate in field conditions and is robust. It can be used effectively to treat Covid-19 patients,” the ministry said.
Later in a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Through PM-CARES, 1.5 lakh units will be purchased from Oxycare Systems. This is a system developed by DRDO and has several benefits.”
The ministry said variants of the system have been configured.
“The basic version consists of a 10-liter oxygen cylinder, a pressure regulator and flow controller, a humidifier and a nasal cannula. The oxygen flow is regulated manually based on the SpO2 readings,” the ministry said. .
“In the second configuration, the oxygen cylinder is equipped with electronic controls that automatically regulate the flow of oxygen through a low pressure regulator and an SpO2 probe,” he said.
Various parts of India have been devastated by a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most common complications that Covid-19 patients face has been a drop in oxygen levels.
The huge increase in coronavirus cases has caused a shortage of medical oxygen across the country.
