Panic when finding bodies floating in the UP river | India News

KANPUR: There was panic among locals in the Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday when they saw seven bodies floating in the Yamuna, amid news of several victims due to Covid-19.
The incident came to light after a video of several bodies floating in the Yamuna in Hamirpur went viral on social media. Although ASP, Hamirpur, Anoop Kumar, did not rule out foul play, he said that many families in the villages still believe in ‘jal samadhi’ (immersion of the body in the river) and prefer it to cremation in some cases based on their beliefs. An investigation is ongoing, he added. “We have contacted the police in the Kanpur Outer and Kanpur Dehat areas. Two bodies were brought from Kanpur on tractors and submerged in the River. We have informed the two districts and we have intensified the vigil in the area, ”said Kumar.
The locals, however, feared that people have died in large numbers in the villages in the second wave and their families are dumping their bodies into the river for fear of contracting the virus. A police officer said: “On average, daily some bodies are seen floating in the Yamuna on the Kanpur-Hamirpur border. But there has been an increase in the number of bodies found floating in the river recently. ”
