NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma He was sworn in as Assam’s 15th chief minister on Monday. He replaced former CM Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sarma, who was the charioteer for the stride of the Bharatiya Janta Party in the northeast, was sworn in in the presence of State Governor Jagdish Mukhi, BJP National Chairman JP Nadda, and other leaders.
Himanta Biswa was selected for the post after BJP chief JP Nadda presided over a crucial meeting in Delhi on Sunday.
The BJP has returned to power in the crucial northeastern state, maintaining its grip on the government. Known for having played a pivotal role in the BJP’s growing footprint in the Northeast, Sarma left the Congress in 2015 despite being close to the Chief Minister Tarun gogoi while feeling marginalized.
The popularity of the minister has been key in the National Democratic Alliancevictory in the Mounting polls in Assam with the alliance returning to power overcoming the tough challenge posed by the congressional-led alliance He was a key party activist and strongly and strategically articulated his position on various issues in the state, which has a diverse population with interests at times in competition.
Upon the announcement, the state’s prime minister, Sarma, took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the people of the state. “With the fragrance of Assam in my heart and the love of my wonderful people in my veins, I offer my deepest thanks to all of you. I would not have been who I am had it not been for your pious faith in me. On this day, I promise to work with and for each of you with the greatest passion Assam, “he tweeted.
In another tweet, he thanked the prime minister Narendra modi saying, “This is the most important day of my life, and I very much appreciate your generous affection. I assure you that we will leave no stone unturned to carry forward your vision of taking Assam and NE to greater heights.”
