GUWAHATI: The Cotton college – old Cotton college – the fraternity was ecstatic after receiving the news that its most popular student union leader of the late 1980s became the 15th chief minister of Assam.

He hoped that under Himanta’s leadership, Assam would become one of the three main states in the country.
Himanta received severe criticism from Cotton residents, who took the lead in escalating protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) when the legislation was passed in December 2019, yet many said they trusted the law.
