Vaccinating people is the only long-term solution to the Covid-19 crisis in India: Fauci | India News

WASHINGTON: Vaccinating people is the only long-term solution to the current Covid-19 crisis in India, America’s leading public health expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Sunday, calling for increased production of Coronavirus vaccines both domestically and globally to combat the deadly pandemic.
“The end of all this … will be to vaccinate people … India is the largest vaccine producing country in the world. They have to get their resources, not just from the inside, but also from the outside, ”Fauci, who is the Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, told ABC News in an interview.
“That is the reason why other countries need to contribute to be able to bring supplies to the Indians to make their own vaccines or for the vaccines to be donated. One of the ways to do that is for the big companies that have the ability to make vaccines really scale up in a great way to get literally hundreds of millions of doses to get to them, “he said.
Responding to a question, Dr. Fauci said that India needs to immediately build makeshift field hospitals like China did a year ago.
“You have to get that. You can’t have people on the street without a hospital bed. The oxygen situation is really critical. I mean, that people do not have oxygen is really tragic, what is happening there, “he said.
The 80-year-old physician and immunologist, who serves as director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said there is an immediate problem of hospital beds, oxygen, personal protective equipment and other supplies.
“Then there is the problem of waiting how you are going to close this, how are you going to turn it around, how are you going to break the chain of transmission.” he said, underscoring the need for a nationwide lockdown to halt the spread of the virus.
“Vaccines is one of them, but there are also other ways, like shutting down the government. I’ve told you in the past that you really need to do that. You have to close. I believe that several of the states in India have already done this, but it is necessary to break the chain of transmission. And one of the ways to do it is to close, ”said the leading American doctor.
Fauci, in an exclusive interview with PTI last week, called the situation in India “very desperate” and suggested that the government pool all its resources, including the armed forces, to immediately build makeshift field hospitals, and urged others countries to help with not only materials but also personnel.
He called for a nationwide blockade, not necessarily for six months, but “for a few weeks” to break the “continuity and transmission of the infection.”
He also recommended mass vaccination to stop the current spread of the deadly disease in India.
India is battling an unprecedented second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic with more than 4,00,000 new daily coronavirus cases reported in recent days.
China reported the first case of Covid-19 in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019 and since then the deadly disease has escalated into a pandemic, affecting more than 157,789,300 people and more than 3,285,200 deaths worldwide.
