Madras HC’s remarks against the Electoral Commission harsh and inappropriate: Supreme Court | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court said Thursday that Madras High Court’s observations against the Election Commission were harsh and inappropriate.
“It is necessary that the judges of the superior courts act with restraint and do not make impromptu remarks in court proceedings,” said the SC.
The Madras high court had observed that concerned EC officials should likely be tried on murder charges for failing to ensure compliance with Covid-19 protocols during the electoral process in four states and one Union territory.
“The observations of the higher court are not part of the court records and therefore there is no need to dwell more on the caustic observations made by Madras HC,” said the SC.
The SC court also said that the media plays an important role in adding vitality to democracy and cannot be restricted from covering court proceedings in any way.
