SRINAGAR: With great success, a joint team of J&K Police, 22 Rashtriya rifles and CRPF shot dead two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, including a foreign national, in an encounter at Nathipora in Sopore in Baramulla district in northern Kashmir on Tuesday.
The murdered foreign terrorist, identified as Hamas alias Asrar alias Saria, was involved in the murder of two councilors and a policeman in Sopore on March 29 this year, a senior police official said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir rank, Vijay Kumar said that in specific information provided by the Kupwara police regarding the presence of terrorists in Nathipora, the joint cordon and search operation was launched. As the search team approached the suspicious location, the Lashkar terrorists in hiding fired at the security forces, triggering the encounter, during which the former were given a chance to surrender, but did not.
The two were eventually killed and security forces recovered weapons and ammunition, including an AK-47 rifle and an Insas rifle, from the meeting place. More searches are underway.
Police said that based on the similarity to a photograph, the murdered local terrorist could be Wasim Ahmed Lone from Hatlangoo in Sopore. His family is being called to identify the body.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure to maintain public order in the Sopore police district, authorities suspended internet services in the area.
