Fauci suggests a blockade of a few weeks in India to break the chain of transmission of the coronavirus | India News

NEW DELHI: Top US epidemiologist Anthony Fauci has suggested a lockdown for a few weeks in India as an immediate step to contain the spread of the coronavirus, as its second deadly wave shows no signs of reflux.
Fauci, in an interview with The Indian Express, said that something else more important in the immediate future is getting supplies of oxygen, medicine, PPE.
He said that seeing the magnitude of the crisis, India should think about forming a crisis group that would get together and start organizing things.
Without naming any government, he said one of the things that should have been recognized that “victory was declared perhaps too prematurely.”
“Well, one of the things that really needs to be done, as far as possible, is to temporarily close the country, I think it is important. If we want to take a break and go back to what I said: there is the immediate, the intermediate and the long term (measures to contain the virus).
“I think the most important thing immediately is to get oxygen, supplies, medicines, PPE, that kind of thing, but also, one of the immediate things to do is basically call for a closure of the country,” he said. Fauci, who is the Biden administration’s chief medical adviser.
He said that when China had a huge explosion of coronavirus cases a year ago, they shut down completely.
Fauci said it is not necessary to close for six months, but it may be temporary to end the transmission cycle.
So one of the things to consider is shutting down temporarily, he said.
“Literally block so you end up having less spread. Nobody likes to block the country. Well that’s a problem when you do it for six months,” he said.
But just a few weeks of lockdown could have a significant impact on the dynamics of the outbreak.
Some states have imposed a blockade. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the lockdown should be the “last resort” to deal with the terrible pandemic and called on states to convince migrant workers to stay in their workplaces with a guarantee. for their lives and sustenance.
Breaking all its previous records, India hit a daily record with more than 4 lakh of new infections on Saturday, while active cases crossed the 32 lakh mark.
The second wave of the coronavirus has been wreaking havoc, infecting billions and killing thousands every day for the past few days. There have been cases where people have died due to a lack of medical facilities, including oxygen. In many cases, families have to organize oxygen for their patients, since they cannot enter hospitals.
“I heard from some people on the street bringing their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers in search of oxygen. They seem to think there was really no organization, no central organization,” Fauci said.
Underlining that vaccination plays a crucial role in managing the coronavirus situation, Fauci said that if India, a country of 1.4 billion people, has fully vaccinated only two percent of its total population, then it has a long way to go. To go.
“You have to get supplies. You have to make contractual arrangements with the different companies in the world. There are many companies that now have vaccines. I think you have to negotiate with them to try to get a compromise,” he said.
“And also, India is the largest vaccine producing country in the world. That’s what happens: you have to improve your own capabilities to make vaccines,” he added.
