NEW DELHI: Former attorney general and legal luminary Soli J Sorabjee passed away on Friday. He was 91 years old and survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons.
Sorabjee and his wife tested positive for Covid a few days ago, sources said. While his wife is recovering well, Sorabjee succumbed because she had many comorbidities.
Top advocate AM Singhvi, who shares a common boundary with Sorabjee in Niti Bagh, tweeted: “My neighbor, the common wall, Soli Sorabjee, passes away. I went to Max late at night a week ago with Covid, but according to his wife, Zena was stable and well, just restless being alone. Happy to have his house fumigated at Zena’s request. Suddenly (her) heart stopped last night and couldn’t be revived. Long association. ”

Just a few weeks ago, Justice RF Nariman had launched a festschrift in honor of Sorabjee at the IIC in the presence of a generally jovial Sorabjee and his relatives in the presence of many SC and HC judges.
An internationally recognized human rights defender, Sorabjee had been devoted to protecting the fundamental rights of the last man in the socio-economic hierarchy.
Sorabjee’s contributions in the field of constitutional law and India’s victory in the international court of justice against Pakistan in the case of the 1999 Atlantic takedown will be remembered in the future.
Overwhelmed by the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, Sorabjee had unleashed public anguish by presenting a PIL in South Carolina for the Center to instruct the police to equip and train the police to make them capable of fighting terrorists and create an atmosphere where the right to life of citizens is protected.
