BHUBANESHWAR: The state government projected on Tuesday that the number of daily Covid infections will more than double in the coming days and cross 13,000 by May 15 from the current 6,000-6,500, forcing Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to apply. to the state machinery to prepare for the worst possible scenario.

According to the projection of the health department, the number of daily infections could reach 13,249 cases by May 15 at the current growth rate of 1.57% weekly.
Calculating the start of the second wave as of February 18, the health department’s projection indicates that cumulative cases are likely to reach around 2.04 lakh, increasing to more than double from the current 90,135 in the next two weeks. Active cases will rise to around 1.02 lakh compared to 50,958 today.
Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said that an estimated 5,815 patients will be in the hospital on May 15, including 2,040 in the ICU, compared to 2,942 in the hospital now and 1,050 in the ICU. . About 438 patients would be on ventilator in mid-May, compared to 223 today. Mohapatra said the government is ready with infrastructure, logistics and manpower accordingly.
“Although the general occupancy of the hospitals is a comfortable 33% and the occupancy of the ICU 48%. There is pressure in the districts with a high positivity rate like Sambalpur, Sundargarh and other western districts of Odisha, ”said Mohapatra.
To speed up the availability of beds, the government will soon launch a real-time online bed monitoring system so that patients can easily be transferred to hospitals that have empty beds.
Based on the current availability of oxygen cylinders, 32,876 beds can be supported with oxygen. With a growing number of patients, the state’s oxygen consumption has risen to 42.10 MT per day as of Tuesday. The state has a daily production capacity of 129.68 MT through cylinders and 375 MT through liquid medical oxygen.
The state has currently been consuming 1500 vials of Remdesivir injection per day and currently has a stock of more than 44,000 vials. It has submitted tenders for three more lakhs of vials. Currently around 5,000 favipiravir tablets are used per day. The state has a stock of more than 6 lakh and has submitted tenders for an additional 20 lakh.
