Canada to provide $ 10 million to India to support the fight against Covid-19: PM Justin Trudeau | India News

OTTAWA: Canada will provide $ 10 million to India to support the country in its fight against the unprecedented second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced.
At a press conference, Trudeau said Foreign Minister Marc Garneau had “direct talks” with his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, about how Canada can better help, including donating additional medical supplies.
“We are also ready to provide $ 10 million through the Canadian Red Cross to the Indian Red Cross,” said the Prime Minister.
This will support everything from ambulance services to purchasing more personal protective equipment locally, he said.
“If you want to donate to emergency efforts on the ground, go to redcross.ca … As a world, we are in this fight together,” Trudeau said.
On the talks between the foreign ministers of both countries, he said: “We are there to support in any way we can, and those talks are ongoing.”
“It is something that Canadians are very concerned about when we see the terrible and tragic images coming out of India. We know that we have to be there for our friends. And in fact, we have to be there for everyone around the world why not?” I will overcome this pandemic nowhere until we overcome it everywhere, “Trudeau said.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Garneau said on Twitter that he spoke with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar about the Covid-19 situation in the country and conveyed Canada’s solidarity with the people of India.
“This morning, I spoke with @DrSJaishankar to convey Canada’s solidarity with the people of India as they face this deadly wave of # Covid19. Canada is exploring all options to support the urgent needs of India. We are ready to help,” he said in a tweet.
India is battling a second wave of the pandemic with more than 300,000 new coronavirus cases reported daily in recent days, and hospitals in several states are reeling from shortages of medical oxygen and beds.
India recorded a single-day record rise of 3,60,960 coronavirus cases, bringing the total count to 1,79,97,267, while the death toll surpassed two lakhs after 3,293 recent deaths, said Wednesday the Ministry of Health.
The death toll stands at 2,01,187, he said.
