NEW DELHI: Medical oxygen supply has increased nearly fourfold, from 1,273 metric tons in one day in the last week of February to 4,739 metric tons in one day on April 17, government sources said Tuesday.
Amid concerns over medical oxygen shortages, as coronavirus cases rise across the country, the central government has taken several steps to increase the supply of oxygen to hospitals. Indian railways will run ‘Oxygen Express’ trains for the next few days to carry liquid medical oxygen and oxygen cylinders through
the country.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had previously reported that 162 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants had been licensed by the Center for installation in public health facilities in all states.
The Ministry of Health also reported that in addition to 162 plants already sanctioned, the states have requested from the Center more than 100 additional plants of this type that are also being sanctioned.
The Director General of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) Dr. Balram Bhargava stated on Monday that oxygen utilization has been higher in the second wave of Covid-19.
