Stalin urges Prime Minister Modi to lift the restrictions imposed on states in the procurement of drugs to combat Covid-19 | India News

CHENNAI: DMK President MK Stalin on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lift restrictions on states on drug procurement to combat Covid-19. He also urged the prime minister to increase the supply of vaccines to Tamil Nadu and to decide quickly on universal vaccination.
Stalin wrote a letter to the prime minister that was also signed by all DMK deputies from Tamil Nadu.
Stalin said that the people of Tamil Nadu urgently need vaccines to fight the spread of infection and break the cycle. “Although the bureaucrats are taking the necessary preventive measures, it has led to a situation where even Tamil Nadu’s general counsel admitted to the high court that the situation is completely spiraling out of control.”
Since the Government of India has not yet made a political decision on universal vaccination, only the priority sections have access to the vaccine now.
“With these kinds of restrictions in the vaccination campaign, it is very impossible to vaccinate even people in need according to the priority of the Center,” he said.
In Tamil Nadu, only 46.7 lakh people have been vaccinated, including 6.05 lakh, who received the second dose. The state government had demanded 20 lakh of vaccines from the Center, Stalin said.
He called on Modi to immediately intervene and order the ministry in question to supply more Covaxin and Covishield vaccines to Tamil Nadu according to the state population, in addition to immediately sending 20 lakh of vaccines requested by the state government.
Stalin also stressed the need for the Center to allow states to independently procure medicines, vaccines and medical equipment, as states affected by the pandemic could not wait each time the Center authorized each and every one to save human lives. “It is reasonable to expect the Center to play an active role in sharing international expertise and facilitating interstate coordination and letting states deal with the pandemic independently.”
“Therefore, I ask you to lift all restrictions placed on the states for direct procurement and make every effort to strengthen the State Disaster Management Authority in the true spirit of cooperative federalism,” Stalin said.
He also called on Modi to quickly make a political decision for “universal vaccination” and help Tamil Nadu to overcome the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
