Launch of Sputnik V this quarter, local manufacturing in the second quarter | India News

HYDERABAD: The Russian Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, which received emergency use authorization (USA) earlier this week, will be available for use in India in the April-June quarter with imports from Russia. Local manufacturing will begin operating in the July-September quarter, senior officials at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories said Wednesday.
“The first batches will be produced by RDIF (Russian Direct Investment Fund) and we will import them to India,” said Dr Reddy’s Laboratories co-chairman and managing director GV Prasad. The sources added that RDIF could start shipping the doses from Russia in mid-May once the vaccine batches are tested and approved by Indian regulators.
Dr. Reddy’s has a contract with RDIF to distribute equivalent doses to 125 million people. This would be a combination of imports and locally manufactured doses and can be increased subject to mutual discussions, said Deepak Sapra, CEO of APIs and Pharmaceutical Services, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories. Most of the vaccine doses that will be produced in India will be used in India until the availability of the vaccine decreases over a period of time as more sites start manufacturing.
