NEW DELHI: In the current context of increasing Covid cases, the Interministerial Empowered Group (EG2) has been meeting and facilitating the supply of essential medical equipment, particularly related to the supply of medical oxygen to States, said the Ministry of Union Health.
The Empowered Group has been meeting and interacting frequently with states, oxygen manufacturers and other stakeholders to facilitate the provision of medical oxygen to states as needed, he added.
Medical oxygen is a fundamental component in the treatment of patients affected by Covid-19.
According to the Ministry of Health, there is a sufficient production capacity of around 7127 MT of oxygen in the country and, depending on the needs, the surplus oxygen available with the steel plants is also being used.
“The country has a daily production capacity of 7127 MT of oxygen per day. Against this, the total production has been 100 percent since the last two days, as indicated by EG2, since the supply of medical oxygen has increased quickly, “he said. .
The ministry said that on April 12, 2021, the consumption of medical oxygen in the country was 3,842 MT, which is 54 percent of the daily production capacity.
The maximum consumption of medical oxygen in the country is for the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, followed by Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Rajasthan.
“The country’s current oxygen stocks, including industrial oxygen stocks with manufacturing plants, exceed 50,000 tonnes,” he said.
The ministry has also asked states to make rational use of medical oxygen and ensure that there is no oxygen waste. “In addition, states must establish control rooms to ensure a smooth supply of oxygen to districts as needed, review requirements for cylinders, tankers, etc.,” he added.
The Empowered Group has also initiated several measures to ensure the supply of medical oxygen to various affected states, including an increase in oxygen production, utilizing available surplus stocks with steel plants, mapping the requirements of major states with sources of oxygen, etc.
“A subgroup under the Ministry of Road and Highway Transportation (MoRTH) has been formed with the Ministry of Railways and the State departments of transport to facilitate the movement of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) tanker trucks. movement of oxygen tanks by rail is also actively working, “the ministry said.
An Inter-ministerial Empowered Group (EG2) of officials chaired by Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra, Secretary of the Department for the Promotion of Industries and Internal Trade (DPIIT) made up of senior officials from various ministries and departments, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW ), the Ministry of Textiles, the Ministry of AYUSH, the Ministry of MSMEs, etc., was established during the Covid pandemic in March 2020 to ensure the availability of essential medical equipment, including medical oxygen, for affected states .
For the past year, EG2 has been continuously monitoring and facilitating the smooth delivery of essential medical equipment, including medical oxygen, to affected states and addressing challenges that arise from time to time.
The Empowered Group is monitoring the medical oxygen supply and demand situation on an ongoing basis to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to support the uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen.
