Farmers Confused As Punjab Arthiyas Search For Blank Checks | India News

BATHINDA / NEW DELHI: Three days after the official start of the wheat purchase in Punjab, uncertainty prevails over the method of payment. The state has implemented direct benefit transfer (DBT) for the first time, but the cashing of blank checks and, in some cases, checks signed by arthiyas has proven to be a concern for farmers who have been left in a state of confusion. . The sources said that the relationship between the arthiyas and the farmers, who are now getting the MSP amount in their bank accounts, is a matter of “mutual understanding”, but they are closely monitoring it.
In Punjab, five state agencies purchase food grains and pay the MSP. The Food Corporation of India reimburses the amount to state purchasing agencies when it picks up stored grains. “The purchasing agencies obtain loans from the banks only because there is a guarantee that FCI will reimburse the amount of the grain acquired by them. So ultimately, the payment goes from the Center. Now there is no need to move the ship when the state finally agreed to implement the DBT after several extensions, “said a source. Meanwhile, several farmers said the arthiyas are accepting blank checks to ensure the repayment of their loans or even the amount of interest on loans advanced to farmers.
