The Supreme Court said Monday that an invitation to successful lawyers to become judges of the CS or HC should be accepted and disapproved by the rejection of such offers by some “good lawyers.”
This comment came from a CJI SA Bobde bank and judges AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian in a PIL presented by attorney Ashwini Upadhyay, who was seeking direction from the government to amend the Constitution to increase the retirement age of HC judges from 62 years to 65 years. South Carolina judges retire at age 65.
“I know many of the best advocates who have turned down the offer of the judiciary in the HC only because of the early retirement age for HC judges,” he said. “If successful and ‘best’ advocates don’t want to become constitutional court judges, then there is something wrong with their thinking. And he calls them the ‘best defenders,’ ”Bobde said.
