Violence Follows Victory of Royal Scion of Tripura, Sec 144 in 5 Districts | India News

AGARTALA: One day after Tripura’s newly formed royal scion alliance Pradyot Kishore Debbarman defeated the BJP in tribal council elections, violence swept several districts of the state amid accusations that supporters of the winning side attacked offices and workers of the saffron party and its ally, the Tripura Indigenous Peoples Front.
Section 144 was restricted in parts of the Khowai, West Tripura, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura districts even as Debbarman warned his supporters on Sunday that violence, whatever the provocation, will not be tolerated, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee.
Workers from the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, which together with the INPT won 18 of the 28 seats at the polls of the Autonomous District Council of the Tribal Areas of Tripura, had allegedly attacked the BJP and IPFT cadres and set fire to offices following a famous victory.
In an anguish-filled video message, Debbarman said: “Before the victory, I had urged everyone not to engage in any form of violence, but I received reports from various parts of the state that, on behalf of TIPRA, people are collecting money. for victory rallies, attacking houses and people from other parties. I will not tolerate this. ”
He noted that “the culture of violence after the elections and the victory over the workers of the opposition parties” had been a characteristic of Bengal and Tripura for many decades.
