NEW DELHI: India reported a record 168,912 Covid-19 infections overnight, data from the Health Ministry showed on Monday, surpassing Brazil to become the second most affected country globally by the coronavirus.
India’s total count reached 13.53 million, topping Brazil’s 13.45 million cases, according to data compiled by Reuters. The United States led the world tally with 31.2 million cases.

Deaths in India totaled 904, bringing the total to 170,179, the data showed.

This is the second time since the coronavirus outbreak that India surpassed Brazil in total number of cases. On September 7, 2020, when India saw an increase of 90,000 cases in a single day, India’s total surpassed Brazil’s by 4,204,613 cases.
However, the second wave of Covid-19 has hit the country hard and India has reported more than a lakh of cases every day since April 5.
