Covid-19: India Approves Russian Sputnik V Vaccine for Emergency Use | India News

NEW DELHI: India on Monday granted Emergency Use Authorization (USA) to the Russian covid Sputnik V vaccine, as the country continues to reel under the second wave of coronavirus.
The approval comes on the day that India reported 168,912 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours to surpass Brazil as the second country most affected by Covid-19 in the world. India’s overall coronavirus count has reached 13.53 million.
The Subject Matter Expert Committee (SEC) had met earlier last week and asked for more information on the vaccine. The government-created committee reviewed Dr. Reddy’s request for approval for the vaccine to be used in India.
The Russian vaccine is 91.6 percent effective. Dr Reddy’s Lab has partnered with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to bring the Sputnik V vaccine to India and other countries.
Russia had registered Sputnik V for public use in August, the first country to do so, although the approval came before the start of full-scale testing in September.
According to media reports, India by the end of the third quarter of this year will receive vaccines from five additional manufacturers. India currently manufactures Covishield and Covaxin.
In addition to Sputnik, India could implement Johnson and Johnson (Bio E), Cadilla Zydus, Novavex (Serum Institute of India) and Nasal Vaccine (Bharat) later this year.
