3 days later, BJP removes Senger’s wife from the UP electoral contest | India News

LUCK: BJP overturned the candidacy of Sangeeta Senger, wife of expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger, for the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Kuldeep Senger was convicted of raping a minor in Unnao a year and a half ago.
The development came three days after Sangeeta’s name was announced as the official BJP candidate to challenge Unnao’s zila panchayat polls. Although the panchayat elections are not held with party symbols, the BJP released the list of its official candidates for the first time.
Announcing the decision, UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh said the district unit had been asked to send a three-name panel to state headquarters soon.
Unnao will go to the polls in the third phase on April 26. The nomination process will take place from April 13 to 15. Sangeeta received a ticket from Fatehpur Chaurasi District 3 in Unnao. She had also won the 2016 zila panchayat president polls.
While Singh did not specify the reason behind the decision, sources said the party was reluctant to invite criticism from the opposition for the presentation of a candidate whose husband had a tainted background, as it could affect the party’s prospects in the elections of local rural bodies.
Party sources said Sangeeta became the candidate given her family’s influence on Unnao. His candidacy was approved by a state committee headed by Singh and the party’s secretary general of state, Sunil Bansal.
Party sources indicated that even after his conviction in the rape case, Senger has found support among the ranks and the archive of the BJP. Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj had visited Senger in jail to thank him after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Senger, who has been sentenced to life in prison, was disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh legislature last year. last in February.
His brother Atul Senger faces charges of beating the victim’s father, who later died in police custody.
