JAIPUR: Two officers were killed after suspected drug traffickers opened fire when they were detained at separate checkpoints in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan late Saturday night.
According to police, the assailants in a pickup, two cars, and an SUV were speeding and began shooting at a patrol party at 11 p.m. when police tried to stop them to check. “The police team from the Sricharbhuja temple below the Kotadi police station tried to arrest them. The passengers in the vehicles started shooting intermittently, ”said a senior police officer.
“A bailiff Onkar Raika (25) was injured. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed. He had received bullets in the chest and other parts, ”he added.
Soon after, the police began barricading the borders of the district and alerted all the police stations in the area. However, some 30 minutes later, unknown assailants opened fire again almost 25 miles from the previous location in the Raila area of Bhilwara, wounding and killing another officer. “The bailiff, identified as Pawan Chaudhary (27), suffered gunshot wounds and fell unconscious. Our team rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, ”said the officer.
Preliminary investigation suggested that the same gang was involved in both incidents. “We have recovered a jeep and one more vehicle involved in the shooting. A large quantity of narcotics has also been recovered, mainly poppy peel, ”said Bhilwara Police Superintendent Vikas Sharma.
He said that some suspects have been detained. “We have concrete information on the whereabouts of the traffickers. They will be caught soon, ”he added.
Bhilwara’s additional SP, Chanchal Mishra, said there has been a case of murder and obstruction of duty officials against unidentified defendants. CM Ashok Gehlot mourned the deaths.
