GUWAHATI: The Election Commission (EC) ordered on Saturday to vote again in four polling stations in Assam on April 20 after discrepancies related to EVM and other anomalies.
The polling stations are 107A- Khothlir LP School and 107- Mualdam LP School in the Haflong constituency (ST), 149-Indira MV School (right) in the Ratabari seat (SC) and 463- Madhya Dhanehari LP School in the district Sonai election.
In Ratabari (SC), the rerun directive followed the discovery of an EVM from a vehicle belonging to MLA’s wife Krishnendu Paul, a BJP candidate from the nearby Patharkandi constituency in the Barak Valley. The Karimganj Deputy Commissioner has already ordered a judicial investigation into the incident to find out why election officials brought a surveyed EVM in an unauthorized vehicle.
In Sonai, the bodyguards of the BJP candidate and vice president of the Assam assembly, Aminul Haque Laskar, opened fire on the public and injured at least three people inside the polling station. Laskar has been questioned and five police officers attached to him have already been suspended in connection with the incident that took place after clashes between BJP and AIUDF supporters broke out inside the booth.
In a bizarre incident in Haflong, some 80 registered voters at a polling station voted in another nearby booth where their names were not listed. As a result, cabbage has been ordered at both polling stations. Five election officials have been suspended in connection with the incident.
EC Secretary Ajay Kumar Verma, in his letter to the electoral director, Assam, stated that the decision on replay was made on the basis of the reports submitted and after taking into account all material circumstances. “Please ensure that new votes are widely publicized by beating the drums in the voting areas of these polling stations and the political parties and candidates in dispute are informed in writing,” the letter reads.
