CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Interior Department has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take custody of the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari from Rupnagar Prison before April 8.
Ansari, who is wanted in several cases in Uttar Pradesh, has been housed in the Rupnagar District Jail in connection with an alleged extortion case since January 2019.
In a letter addressed to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Additional Secretary (Interior), the Punjab Department of the Interior requested that arrangements be made for the transfer of prisoner Ansari.
“This transfer will take place at the Rupnagar District Jail on or before April 8,” the letter said.
Ansari suffers from certain medical conditions and these can be taken into account when arranging for his transportation from Rupnagar jail to Banda jail in UP, he said.
The Punjab Interior Department referred to the March 26 Supreme Court order ordering the state government to transfer the MLA from Mau to Banda Jail in Uttar Pradesh in two weeks.
In delivering the order, the high court had also noted that Ansari was allegedly involved in several cases of attempted murder, deception and conspiracy, in addition to the crimes under the Gangster Law, brought in Uttar Pradesh and 10 of these cases are found in different stages of trial.
