Gujarat Assembly Passes “Love Jihad” Bill | India News

GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat assembly passed a bill on Thursday proposing amendments to the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Law of 2003, paving the way for stricter punishment for forced religious conversions through marriage. The amendment bill provides up to 10 years in prison for “fradulent” or “forced” conversion by marriage.
According to the government, the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill of 2021 sought to reduce the “emerging trend in which women are drawn into marriage for the purpose of religious conversion.”
The BJP government in Gujarat claimed that ‘love jihad’ or forced conversion had become a major public order issue.
