SRINAGAR: Terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba attacked the councilors’ meeting place in the Sopore City Council on Monday, resulting in the death of a BJP councilor and a security guard, while another councilor was injured.
A senior police officer said: “Terrorists quickly attacked the councilors’ meeting place where a councilor and a security guard lost their lives.”
He said the murdered people were identified as Councilor Reyaz Ahmad Peer from Ningli in Sopore and SPO Shafqat Nazir Khan from Mundji in Sopore. He added that the two succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses said that BJP councilor Riyaz Pir from Ningli, council chairman security guard Masrat Kar and councilor Shamsuddin Pir from Jamia Qadeem Sopore suffered gunshot wounds.
Meanwhile, all political leaders, including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, condemned the attack. Abdullah tweeted: “There is news of an attack by militants in the municipal office of Sopore. My unequivocal condemnation of this attack along with my condolences for the dead and prayers for the injured.”
Srinagar City Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu also condemned in a tweet: “Strongly condemn the vile attack in Sopore, where a city council councilor and a policeman have lost their lives in the line of duty. My condolences to the bereaved families, Allah Jannat Naseeb Karey Ameen ”.
“This inhumane attack against the elected representatives of the people can bring nothing but bring more chaos and agony to the people,” he added. Kashmir Police Inspector General Vijay Kumar visited Sopore on Monday and inspected the site of the attack.
Officials said the chief police officer met with the commander of the Army sector, DIG (CRPF), and the SSP, Sopore. “Local LeT terrorist Mudasir Pandit and a foreign militant are involved in the attack,” the IGP said. However, he said, the investigation continues. “The cordon and search operations began in two places immediately,” he said.
In addition, the IGP said that it has ordered the Sopore SSP to suspend 4 OSPs, who were present at the scene and did not retaliate properly.
