Former MP calls Rahul “single troublemaker”, sparks controversy in Kerala | India News

IDUKKI (KERALA): As the campaign for the assembly elections reached a fever pitch in Kerala, former MP Joyce George sparked controversy by making alleged derogatory remarks against Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi in relation to the latter’s interaction with students at a women’s university in Kochi last week. .
George, who had won as a CPM-supported independent during Idukki’s 2014 parliamentary elections, made highly objectionable remarks against Nehru’s scion while addressing an election rally in Irattayar here on Monday.
Distancing himself from the comments, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the LDF’s position is not to attack Gandhi personally.
“We will oppose him politically, not personally,” Vijayan told reporters in Kasaragod on Tuesday.
Attacking the congressional-led UDF opposition and Rahul Gandhi in particular, George said that Gandhi would visit only women’s colleges and that girls should be “cautious” when dealing with the former president of Congress.
“Girls never bow down to him … he’s a single troublemaker,” he alleged.
The former independent left-wing MP’s comments came days after Gandhi gave Aikido lessons at the famous St. Theresa University in Kochi, at the request of a student.
The congressional leader had visited the women’s college to interact with the students after they had come to the state to campaign.
Joyce George’s statement drew intense criticism from Congress.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala on Tuesday called the sexually colored comments against Gandhi “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
A case must be filed against the former deputy and he must be arrested, he said.
Member of Parliament and leader of the Youth Congress, Dean Kuriakose, lashed out at the former MP, saying George could have spoken about his own character.
“The vulgarity within him has come out now. What is his merit in criticizing Rahul Gandhi? He is trying to follow in the footsteps of power minister MM Mani, known for making such disparaging remarks,” he said.
Kuriakose said through the comments that the former MP had not only insulted Gandhi but also the students.
He also said that he will soon file a complaint with the Election Commission against George in this regard.
Criticizing George, Kerala Congress leader PJ Joseph said the comments were “immature” and wanted to know if it was the opinion of the entire LDF.
However, Minister MM Mani justified George and said that he had not made any comments against women and only criticized Rahul Gandhi.
